Ondaatje's Works Interpreted by Dance Choreographer Andrea Nann is teaming up with Canadian author Michael Ondaatje Thursday night in Vancouver to interpret two of his novels through dance. Nann will perform two dances inspired by Ondaatje's novels Anil's Ghost and In the Skin of the Lion as the author reads excerpts from the text. "His work is so poetic and it's so visual and so textural. It's always about the human story," Nann said. "Distilling it into a dance, that's where I had the biggest struggle, and Michael was the one who directed me and just said look for the story within the story." Nann said she doesn't literally depict the stories through dance but that the dance is inspired by the story. "I'm not trying to say this is what the work is. I'm just saying this is my response to the work, and this how I express my response." The Windsor Symphony Orchestra is commissioning five Canadian composers to each create a new work based on the poetry of Ondaatje. The five pieces will debut during the symphony's Canadian Music festival early next year. Each composer will choose one of Ondaatje's poems from his book Handwriting and translate it into a 10-minute orchestral piece. Source: CBC.ca |
