American Dance Festival Sweeps Durham off its Feet Celebrations started Thursday night in Durham for the American Dance Festival's 70th anniversary. A group from Taiwan gave the first performance of the festival. "It has an international scope to it -- we have companies from France, we have a company from India, Japan, we have a choreographer from Russia,” said Jodee Nimerichter of the American Dance Festival. Their rehearsals offer a glimpse of the festival's artistry. Nimerichter says these performances draw 30,000 people to Durham each summer. The festival began in Connecticut before moving to Durham. Last year the festival moved from Broad Street to the campus of Duke University. "It was really a place to experiment and it has grown to be this incredible place where people come from all over the world," said Nimerichter. Dancers and choreographers like Ching Chun Lee say they appreciate the embrace from Durham. "We're very happy to be here again, nice weather, nice people for this beautiful festival,” said Lee. Nimerichter says the festival is a unique chance for people in Durham to explore the world of dance. "There's a little bit of something for everyone, so if you're not interested in one particular company you should look at the entire season because modern dance has no definition and there's something for everyone,” said Nimerichter.
